“I’m Too Old To Learn Guitar…”

People come up with all kinds of reasons why they are prevented by forces outside of themselves from playing guitar, and one of the most common is: “I’m too old to learn guitar…”

And then the floodgates open: “If I had started when I was younger, it would be a different story!…You can’t teach an old dog new tricks, James…I was reading recently that the brain actually starts losing its ability to remember new information as early as our late 20s!…Guitar is a young man’s game, James…”

Etc etc etc.

It’s interesting how people who say all this (usually with a weird satisfaction in their voices) rarely even try a few guitar lessons and assess how they feel after that.

“I’m too old to learn guitar.”

No you’re not.

If you’re someone who has bought into nonsense about being too old and talked yourself out of learning guitar as a result, stop it. Take some of that same energy and learn a few chords and a bunch of songs. I’ll be glad to show them to you. It’ll change your life for the better, and you’ll be off and running.
